An Immigrant-led group has released the “Deportation Defense Manual” to help immigrants avoid deportation by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE.
It is filled with practical tips and advice that immigrants can use if ICE shows up at their home or at their workplace, which we’ll take a look at in just a moment.
The manual was created by “Make The Road New York,” an organization that provides services to immigrants and helps them understand their rights.
Their goal is to educate people under threat of deportation about how to avoid arrest, fight deportation, respond to raids, and find legal defense.
According to their document, if ICE comes to your home then:
The manual says that if ICE shows up at your workplace then they cannot enter without permission from your employer or a valid warrant.
If they do enter your workplace then it recommends that you stay calm, do not run, and do not resist arrest… just state out loud that you do not consent to a search and do not give them any documents voluntarily.
It also gives instructions if you are pulled over while driving, explaining that you should only present valid license, registration, and proof of insurance when asked, and that you should not answer questions on your immigration status.
Some of the responses recommended by the manual include “I want to exercise my right to remain silent” and “I want to speak with a lawyer.”
