Supreme court rules immigrants can be detained indefinitely
On Monday, June 13, the Supreme Court ruled against immigrants who had been detained, declaring that they are not entitled to a bond hearing.
Two cases were brought to the court by unauthorized immigrants who were challenging their prolonged detention by the government. They argued that immigrants held in detention longer than six months should get a hearing, and that the government needs to provide a reason for detaining them.
The Supreme court ruled against them, stating that unauthorized immigrants are not entitled to such a hearing or legal counsel.
As of June 5, more than 24,500 people were held in immigration detention, and only about 21% have access legal representation. With Congress and President Biden failing to implement immigration reform, federal judges are increasingly determining how US immigration policy works.
